In November 2011, the NRC created the Japan Lessons Learned Directorate. It was tasked with implementing recommendations of an NRC    group that studied the nuclear accident in Japan and proposed ways to enhance U.S. nuclear power plant safety. The directorate, with more than 20 technical experts and support staff from throughout the agency, focused its first year on issuing orders and requesting more information from the industry. The group’s ongoing work will determine the most effective ways of implementing the remaining recommendations.
